In Formation is a series of 3 sessions designed to create space for talking about how and why we gather, what we're learning, and where we're being called as a church.

Session 1 was on September 29. This is a space for you to (re)engage with that content:

After a shared meal, we watched this video and spent time talking about the big ideas together ...

Around tables, we shared our thoughts and experiences around the following questions:

  • Name some of the shifts you’ve observed in our culture. How do you experience these in your day to day life? How are you experiencing cultural shifts in the church?
  • For several years at FBCC, we’ve been talking about listening and discerning. How do you engage this practice in your own life? Do you find it comes naturally to you?
  • How does our current understanding of church identity (e.g., attendance, programs, activities, denomination, etc.) align or conflict with the idea that the church is an instrument of God's mission rather than the goal? How might we need to reimagine our priorities to align more with God's heart and mission?
  • What does "reimagining the role of the church" mean to you, and what shifts in our mindset, practices, or structures might be necessary for us to truly embrace God's mission? How can we foster a culture of openness to new possibilities while staying grounded in God's purposes?
  • Think about the different spheres of influence and connection you’ve got (where you live, work, go to school and play) what do you think Good News looks like to the people and places in those contexts?
  • Where can you identify God at work in those people/places?

We participated in a listening exercise (Lectio Divina) using a passage from Luke 10...

As you watch the video, participate in the practice. Make notes of your experience if you'd like.

We introduced a Community Practice to engage with throughout the next season...

Together we are reading Liturgy of the Ordinary by Tish Harrison Warren and processing/discussing in community. Some of you have decided to use this book with your small group and we think that’s awesome!

If you need more copies, you can find them for sale in a variety of places (Amazon, Indigo, Christian Books).

Audio versions are also available via Audible, and some local libraries.

We'll be communicating regularly over the next several months (until the next In Formation session on January 19!), touching base on this Community Practice, sharing stories and learnings, and passing on additional resources that might be engaging.
