"It is a privilege to be a part of the worship ministry at Forest Brook. I enjoy being involved in aiding the congregation into rich and meaningful worship. Music is a talent that God has blessed me with and it is wonderful to see this gift bless others"

"My family lived in Guelph and we would often come up to visit my sister and her family, and we would go to Forest Brook with them on Sunday mornings. One thing that I noticed was that there seemed to be so much going on for people of all ages. The church was friendly and had a great excitement about it. I loved the music and the contemporary feel that the place had. I had come to the conclusion that this was the kind of church I wanted to be at. Much to my amazement and through God's leading, we as a family were able to become a part of the Forest Brook family when Mark accepted his new roll as facility manager in 2006. It has been a wonderful experience to enjoy the Forest Brook community, and we look forward to future growth together"

"I really like the Young Adults group. We talk about God's will and God's plan for your life. I don't know what I want to do with my life- not a clue! Nothing whatsoever. And it's a place where I feel safe to talk about things and voice my opinions… and there are people going through it with you."

"What made you want to be a Youth Leader?"

"I guess because previously I had struggled making connections with the youth. But I know where youth stand. And I'm there to give my two cents and to help - to be there for guidance. To be a road sign like, this is the way you should go. To help show that something good will come out of it."

"Is there a time in your life that you've really felt God's presence and power?"

"Oh ya- a number of times! One instance for sure is when I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. And I know that in that whole experience, it was about God showing me how I can trust Him. It wasn't about necessarily the awfulness of what I was told. It was the peace and the knowledge that, you know what? I can trust Him. It might not be easy. Some days it wasn't. But He was there for me, He was still guiding me, He still had a plan. It wasn't like I was thinking, 'Ok, I'm going to die' - we're all going to die. It was more that I could trust Him. He loved me that deep.
And I keep going back to that- many, many times."

"What I've been learning, particularly at ForestBrook, is that people are risking to be real. Rather than putting on a facade or a Sunday face, people are willing to be able to say, "We are broken - we are human. Yet by the grace of God we are able to get through this together."

"This is my only church I've ever been to. I've been here my entire life. My favourite thing is the people that I've met, and knowing that it's a safe place to come to. I like the youth- especially this year. I just feel really close to them, and that I'm able to share whatever I want with them."

"God's been teaching me that so much of life is out of our control. That we just have to depend on him because we can't control the future."

"I'm like the Assistant Head Usher. You have to be over 65 to be the Head Usher- and I'm not quite there yet."

"What's the best part about being an usher?"
"The best part is meeting people!"

"I'm wearing the best shirt for a picture today."

"If you wanna get involved there's probably somewhere you can, or if you wanna try out something new [Forestbrook] is really open and encouraging. I'm passionate about the arts- so the Gallery here. Audra and myself wanted to try something and everyone was very open."

"What's your favourite part of Children's Worship?"
    "Seeing everybody in our class."

"So you're in the same class, then?"
"No. But I know most of the people in hers!"
"And I know half the people in hers!"

"Where are you girls off to now?"
"We don't know, we're just walking around chatting!"

"Something that God is teaching me is that I have underestimated the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. And I'm learning to sense and feel the Holy Spirit throughout the day in different ways. And there's real power there that I think, historically I haven't connected with as meaningfully. It's pretty exciting what I see happening at Forestbrook as well. I think there's an awakening happening to the Holy Spirit.

"Well, I'm at school and I'm on my own- so right now God's been teaching me how to be more of, I dunno, a real person. I'm learning things on my own- like, I have to go find a church on my own. And He's really teaching me to be patient, because especially being in school, there's so many things I'm doing at once that I forget to relax. The sermon was really helpful in teaching me control- and learning to give that to Him."

"What has been the happiest moment of your life?"

"The immediate thought is when Jaclyn or Graydon were born, or when I got engaged… but to be honest if I'm thinking of the happiest moment of my life- it would be my family being together. Sundays at lunch for bad roast beef that my mom would make and dry out horribly, and we'd all sit around the dining room table, and we'd be there for a couple of hours, all of us talking. And Christmas. Same thing. Those repeated- every Sunday and every Christmas is the happiest moment. That memory of my family."

"What's something that God has been teaching you lately?"

"Honestly, that I don't have to have it all together all the time, and that it's ok to be vulnerable and open. And that within this community there are safe places for that."

"How was your first week with a worship team?"

"Well I moved my feet which I don't usually do… and I like that they're getting everyone involved.  Because it took about six people prompting me to get up here to play bass. So that's kind of what I appreciate. I mean it took two years- but I made it here."

"What's the biggest thing people in school/just graduated from school struggle with?"

Joel, "Culturally we're expected to do things by certain ages, and if we don't meet those requirements we feel less-than. It's like, we should move out by a certain age, get a job at a certain age, get married by a certain age, have kids by a certain age, etc. It's hard if you don't feel like you're meeting those timelines."

Rebecca, "And all of the life changes. Finding the balance between work life and school life."

"One thing I'm really realizing more and more is that God is sovereign and yet He really calls us to pray. And I think we miss out on what He really wants for us, because we don't seek Him enough."

HOFB is a blog dedicated to capturing the stories of everyday disciples.  You can also follow us on Instagram @HumansofForestBrook.

If we're ONE BODY, then we need to connect. With people outside of our regular crew, outside of our generation, outside of our small group. Outside of our comfort zone.

We need to tell our stories. This is a small way that we are starting to tell the stories of those in our own community.

We're all human. Just everyday people trying our best to live our our faith at home, at work, at school and at play. To build His Kingdom, here.
