    Preaching and Teaching

The ministry of the Word is very important at Forest Brook. In the early days of this church our motto was "The whole Bible for the whole family".  This established our belief and commitment to the relevance of the Scriptures in our everyday lives. Our aim in preaching is to encourage the people of God to put into practice the truths of Scripture in every day ways.  We want to be "doers" of the Word, not just "hearers" (James 1:22).

At Forest Brook we encourage the use of all the gifts within our church body. For this reason, we have always had a diverse group of speakers who teach at our church. We have been blessed as God has always provided a number of gifted preachers and teachers and we celebrate that the Holy Spirit uses many whom He has gifted to speak to our congregation.

Also listed in our core values is "unity in diversity". Because of the varying personalities, backgrounds and styles of both the hearers and speakers we feel enriched in our understanding of how God speaks to his people. All of our messages are biblically based - though their delivery will change based on the style and approach of the speaker.

Our preaching leadership group coordinates all of our sermon series', this group is supervised by our Elders.  This group is made up of various individuals (not just speakers) representing the many facets of the congregation. This group meets regularly to pray, discuss and plan how to meet the preaching needs of the congregation.

On occasion we have guest speakers who will teach on a Sunday morning, our Pastoral staff regularly speak as well, here is an introduction to our other regular speakers:

Robert Cumberbatch and his wife Juliette came to Canada from the Caribbean in 1975 and have been a part of Forest Brook since 1986. Both of their children came to faith at Forest Brook, and have contributed three wonderful grandchildren of which he is justly proud. Robert wears many hats including working on projects for Elections Canada as Returning Officer for Ajax-Pickering, providing Computer Software training for the Durham District School Board, and developing  databases for small and medium businesses.  He has preached all over the Caribbean, as well as an occasional speaker at FBCC.  Robert has served at FBCC as an elder, small group leader, and a member of several councils and committees.  He continues to serve on the Preaching Leadership Group.

Dan Fortin and his wife Jeri have been attending Forest Brook for close to 22 years.  They have three grown children – Chris married to Rebecca; Lindsay married  to Tim, who have recently added grandson Isaac to the family; and Alex who attends University in Calgary, Alberta.  Dan has worked at  IBM, for over 35 years,  in several different roles.  He graduated in Engineering from Carleton University and was recognized recently by his alma mater.  Both Dan and Jeri have been involved at Forestbrook over the years - Jeri works in the office , as well as several other ministries.  Dan has served as an elder for 8 years, as well as other ministries.  Dan enjoys speaking and always considers it a privilege to stand before the congregation at Forest Brook.

Bryan Karney has been attending Forest Brook for 26 years.  He and his wife Joy have watched with pleasure as their 3 children, Adrienne, Alex and Christina grew up within the church community, come to faith, be baptized and move on in their lives, in the words of Luke, to grow “in wisdom and in stature.”  Bryan is the Associate Dean of Engineering at U of T and loves teaching engineering classes at all levels.  During the last 24 years at Forest Brook, Bryan has served as small group leader, teaching council chair, briefly as a shepherd in Children’s ministry, as co-Sunday school superintendent, and over numberous years in several stages, as an elder.  Bryan has been an occasional speaker at Forest Brook almost since he arrived, and has given more than 100 messages over the years.

Carl Nash started attending Forest Brook in 2008 with his wife Leanne and their 3 daughters (Rebekah, Naomi and Deborah).  He is currently the Ministry Director of Youth Unlimited (Toronto Youth for Christ).
Carl has mentored and coached student leaders for twenty years, and has enjoyed times of working as a Physical Therapist and Youth Pastor.  He is a graduate of Ontario Theological Seminary (Masters of Divinity) and the Arrow Leadership Program.  Carl enjoys teaching/preaching and considers it a privilege to be able to communicate timeless Biblical truths in ways that are relevant to our everyday decisions and circumstances.  He also makes a mean stack of blueberry pancakes, but is a story for another day!

Elizabeth Pierce has been married to Todd for almost 17 years.  They have two boys, Ethan and Caleb.  Elizabeth is a clinical social worker by profession and has been providing individual, couple, family and group counselling to children, youth and adults since 1996.  She has also provided many workshops on parenting and self-esteem in the secular community, in addition to being a speaker on a variety of topics at women’s church events and retreats across the Province.  The Pierce family have been attending Forest Brook since 2002, and Elizabeth is currently a Co-ordinator of the Stephen Ministry program. When she is not at work, Elizabeth lives a busy life, full of children’s sporting events, serving in her church and spending time with the important people in her life that God has blessed her with.
